Interview with the Author of Heart. Soul. Pen.: Robin Finn
little infinite: How long have you been writing? How did you start?
Robin Finn: I have been writing all my life, but I started writing in earnest after I became a parent. One of my kids had severe ADHD which meant that we dealt with a lot of judgment from the school, other parents, everyone around us. I felt like I was drowning under the weight of other people’s judgment which led me to return to school to earn a master’s degree in spiritual psychology to better understand my life’s journey. Through that program, I gained the courage and clarity to start writing again and share my stories about parenting kids with ADHD. Ultimately, I became a widely published essayist, author, and teacher, and created Heart. Soul. Pen. Women’s Writing Workshops to help other women find their voices and share their stories.
little infinite: What is the one resource that has helped you during your writing journey the most? This can be a certain app, website, book, podcast, journal, etc.
Robin Finn: The best resource that helped me along my journey was the community I found among other writers. Getting into a writing group and writing in a supportive environment helped improve my craft, build my confidence, inspire ideas I would not otherwise have had, and feel less alone. Writing is a solitary gig. Being a part of a nurturing writing community was a game changer for me.
little infinite: What would you say is your greatest accomplishment as an author so far?
Robin Finn: My greatest accomplishment as an author thus far is writing and publishing two books. For me, writing an essay requires a short spurt of focus and energy, but writing a book requires a marathon of patience and tenacity. I would say completing two books (so far) is my greatest accomplishment.
little infinite: If you could give a new writer one piece of advice for starting, what would that piece of advice be? Why does this piece of advice personally stand out to you?
Robin Finn: My advice to any new writer would be to believe in your words and in the creative call to write. If you feel a story inside of you that wants to emerge, let it. Know that you are good enough and that your words are worthy. Do not let limiting beliefs that you are not a ‘real writer,’ or that you are ‘not enough’ in some way hold you back. Too often, we let our writing dreams pass us by because we do not believe in ourselves strongly enough. If you feel the call to write, answer it and do not be deterred by negative thinking. This piece of advice resonates for me personally because I had many limiting beliefs that I had to let go of before I was able to embrace myself as a writer.
little infinite: What makes you the proudest of this book?
Robin Finn: I am proud I put to words my philosophy as a writer and teacher to empower women to see the value inherent in their stories and their creative self-expression. It my intention that this book serve as a tool for women to build community around writing and deepen in their connection to their own voices and to each other.
